“The Next Generation”

Now this is how you do a song inspired by an object.  Far from the nightmarish “My Headband” featured briefly on Glee, Midon’s “The Next Generation” is actually a hopeful, catchy and uplifting song inspired by the newest Perkins Brailler.

Lyrics, so you can sing along (you know you want to!):

Walking down the street telling everyone I meet
About this feeling that is growing…
Me and all my friends,
And they are telling their friends too
About these changes that they are knowing
In fact, it takes no time at all these days
So much more than just a passing phase

And, have you heard about the next generation?
You’ve got all the information so there is nothing in your way.
Have you heard about the next generation?
You are the leaders of tomorrow,
And tomorrow’s here today.

See the world by touch and what you see can mean so much
That all your words still hold a meaning
It’s better day by day,
Life can give and take away as long as love is where you’re leaning
In fact, it takes no time at all these days
So much more than a passing phase

And, have you heard about the next generation?
You’ve got all the information so there is nothing in your way.
Have you heard about the next generation?
We are the leaders of tomorrow,
And tomorrow’s here today.

I especially love the part about “seeing the world by touch.”  You can download the song for free, and download it as a ring tone for free, at Perkins’ Web site:

If you’re trying to learn braille and haven’t gotten one yet, I can not say enough about how much easier it is to learn with a brailler.  I am incredibly slow with a slate and stylus–and, frankly, it makes my hand hurt.  I got through my class faster and had an easier time memorizing the alphabet by virtue of my own Perkins brailler.  These are pretty expensive new, but I got my older, heavy metal version for under $100 on eBay.

Thank you to Kathy for the heads-up on the song!
